What is the application process?

Here at World Relief Chicago, we take time not only to recruit volunteers who will be a good fit to work with refugees and immigrants, but we also invest in preparing our long-term volunteers thoroughly for their experiences.

From application to placement, the process takes 6 - 8 weeks.

Here are the steps:

1) application, 2) orientation, 3) interview, 4) paperwork, and 5) placement.

Need a visual on that? Click here.

Afraid you won't remember all those steps? No problem! Feel free to use our application checklist.

How do I apply?

Submit your volunteer application by sending it to Rachel Greenwood, one of our volunteer coordinators, at Please avoid sending paper applications if possible.

Within 1-2 weeks of submission, a staff member will reach out to you about volunteering. If your application has been approved, you will be invited to orientation.

What's the orientation like?

Our orientation is a 3-4 hour training that thoroughly prepares you to serve practically, culturally and spiritually. We orient you to WR as an organization, prepare you to work cross-culturally, train you on how to work specifically with refugees and immigrants, and also provide a spiritual framework by which to approach your service.

Need to register for orientation? Click here to view upcoming dates and choose a session that works for you.

Please avoid registering unless you have submitted an application and been invited to attend.

What about the interview?

Our interviews are typically conducted over the phone. We truly believe in investing in our volunteers. This isn't just a way to find out if we're good fits for each other, but also a great way to get to know you!

What paperwork do you require?

We require a criminal background check for all volunteers, and a motor vehicle check for those who may drive clients in their personal vehicles. This check takes 1-2 weeks upon submission.

Volunteers are also required to sign liability waivers where appropriate.

I have more questions!

No problem! We have answers. Please check out our FAQ page.
